Tanja Moderscheim is a Dutch painter known for her flower and still life paintings. She explores the traditions and heritage of the 17th century Dutch Golden Age and combines careful observation and a scientific approach with the expression of poetry and atmosphere. She is a Fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists and holds a PhD in Physiology (Biology).
As a nod to the emerging interest in natural history in the 1600s, she paints subjects typical of the period, such as flowers, birds, and fruit. A distinctive part of her work is her extensive collection of
Dutch heritage tulips, which she grows and paints. These include varieties developed in the late 1500s as well as tulips that were traded during the Tulipmania period of the 1630s.
Her scientific background and keen eye for detail allow her to work closely in the tradition of 17th century Dutch painters: she uses historical techniques and pigments based on old manuscripts and
modern academic research. To additionally enhance the authenticity of her work, she often commissions reproductions of 17th century frames.
Balancing this technical approach, Tanja aims to bring a sense of poetry into her paintings through the use of light and darkness. Raking light, shadow, and space play a central role, giving her subjects a quiet presence.
Alongside her free and commissioned work, Tanja regularly exhibits internationally. Key exhibitions include the Affordable Art Fairs and exhibitions with the SBA, RBA, SWA, and ROI at the Mall Galleries in London. She also gives public and private lectures on the art and cultural history of 17th century Holland, including an invited talk at Strawberry Hill House, held in conjunction with the loan of two Old Master paintings by Van Huysum.
