Lynne Cartlidge RCA is a contemporary painter known for her gentle and luminous still life and flower studies, often featuring everyday objects and capturing the subtle movement of light.
Early Life and Education:
Born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1964, Cartlidge moved to Cornwall, UK, with her family at the age of three. She pursued her artistic education at Falmouth Art College for her foundation course, and then at Cardiff Art College (now Cardiff School of Art & Design), where she earned a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 1987. That same year, one of her figurative paintings was selected for the prestigious Whitworth Young Contemporaries exhibition.
Career and Style:
Since 1987, Lynne Cartlidge has lived and worked in Wales, while maintaining strong links to Cornwall, which often inspires her work, particularly in paintings depicting sea views through windows. She is primarily a still life painter, fascinated by the impact of light and its movement across a space. Her subject matter is drawn from common, everyday items, such as fruit, flowers (roses are a noted passion), teacups, and mussel shells.
Her paintings are characterised by soft, translucent colour and sensitive, painterly brushwork. Her compositions create a sense of balance and order, yet also convey a subtle movement or shimmer, exploring the interplay between static objects, light and passage of time.
Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA):
Lynne Cartlidge was elected a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy of the Arts (RCA) in 2017, a body dedicated to supporting Welsh art and artists.
Her works are collected internationally, including in the USA, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and across the UK and Europe.
