Katherine Reekie SWA
Originally from London, Katherine is now based in Hastings – an environment rich in contrasts and eccentricities, and the inspiration for much of her work.
She studied Fine Art at Camberwell College, and has worked as an Art teacher, craftsperson and a carpenter. However, she has never ceased in her passion for painting and now spends her time as a full-time artist, mainly working in oil paint.
Her imagery, which is often described as accessible but slightly unnerving, is the product of an excellent grounding in traditional figurative art practice, and an interest in the surreal.
In this collection of landscapes she has depicted the fauna that you might find in the foreground of a rural East Sussex view. However, if you look a little deeper into the mesh of grass and wild flowers you might see what lurks within.
Like props on a stage she arranges her subject matter to evoke a sense of order and purpose. However, on greater inspection the world she presents is totally contrived.
Her intention is not to depict reality but to nudge people to question and consider it.
