Annabel Playfair

Embarking on a month-long road trip through the stunning landscapes of Italy and France served as the catalyst for this exhibition. I stayed on Lake Como, then moved on to Chianti in Italy, Grimaud in the South of France, returning home through Provence. As a selection of locations, it was utter paradise for an artist, with so many wonderful views and scenes begging me to paint and, as ever, I never have enough time to capture everything!

When home, I focus on my local area in the Cotswolds, with an emphasis on landscapes, sheep (with their inquisitive and very individual personalities), and garden scenes. I have always been drawn to still life (particularly flowers) and, in more recent times, interiors. Finally, I always have to include a trip to the north coast of Cornwall, focussing on the coastal area either side of the Camel Estuary where the light and colour never cease to inspire me.

I tend to paint en plein air for about 3 hours at a time, after which the light changes. I then work on the painting in my studio, which allows me time to look, think and simplify the final painting, making sure the colours and light are working in harmony. I returned home from Italy and France with 24 paintings but I have had to be quite picky as I wanted this show to include my local and Cornish work too, making for quite a broad range in subject matter, which I hope everyone will enjoy and appreciate.
