All the paintings in my home are a timeless collection spanning over forty years. Put together by my mother Nesta and myself, every picture was purchased from the Fosse Gallery and are enjoyed as much today as when we first acquired them.
My role is not simply to place art but to offer, both through our exhibition programme & artists I champion, considered, informed advice. I listen carefully, understand context and help guide decisions with clarity and care. I believe good collections are shaped through attention, confidence and long-standing relationships. While the art world continues to change, my values remain constant.
All I know, is that the seemingly simple act of purchasing a painting, has been so impactful not only in my home but in the journey of my life. In turn, this is what I give to you, an opportunity to acquire beautiful paintings through my wonderful artists at the Fosse Gallery – from our home to yours.

Matt Williams - Tintern Abbey - Oil on Board - 14 x 11 Inches
Matt Williams is a Welsh painter whose work explores the relationship between people and place. Working predominantly in oils, he is interested in the emotional resonance of landscapes and interiors and in the stories that lie beneath their surfaces. His paintings seek out the traces that time, memory and human activity leave behind, inviting viewers to consider how histories of belonging, exploitation and loss continue to shape the places we inhabit today.
Inspired by the landscapes, history and culture of Wales, Matt is drawn to quiet, contemplative spaces that suggest human presence without necessarily depicting it directly. He is fascinated by places that seem to hold echoes of what has happened there before and is less interested in simply recording a scene than in exploring how a place feels. He has often said that the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi painted Denmark in much the same way that he tries to paint Wales. Hammershøi’s ability to evoke memory, absence and atmosphere has been a significant influence on Matt’s own work.
Underlying his practice is an intensely sensory experience of the world. Matt has a form of synaesthesia in which colour and place have a physical presence in his body; landscapes, buildings and atmospheres leave their own distinct imprint upon him, almost as though they have been pressed against his skin. Living with significant hearing loss from birth has perhaps heightened this embodied experience of place, although he sees the two as intertwined rather than separate.
This heightened sensory awareness lies at the heart of his paintings. Through his work – and occasionally the poetry that accompanies it – Matt seeks to communicate not simply the appearance of a place, but its atmosphere, memory and emotional weight. His paintings are an invitation to slow down, look beyond the picturesque, and experience a place with more than just the eyes.
