Lucien Rees Roberts

Lucien Rees Roberts has been living, working, and painting in New York City since 1981. After studying architecture at Cambridge, he moved to New York where in 1985 he founded an architectural firm with Steven Harris. In recent years, his Interiors and Landscape design firm, Rees Roberts + Partners, has been the main focus of his time, but he has continued to paint portraits and landscapes. With studios at the firm’s Tribeca office and his weekend house in Columbia County, NY, he also spends each August painting at his studio on a secluded island off the coast of Croatia. In addition to commissioned portraits, Rees Roberts has painted large murals on both canvas and tile, designed a series of painted china for Swid Powell, and designed a Juan Gris-style swimming pool – all of which have been published. Recently one of his landscapes was featured in the main set of a popular feature film, and a book of his residential work with Steven Harris is being published by Princeton Architectural Press in America.
Artspeak, December 1984
“What is riveting about Rees Roberts’ work is that the portraits capture the essence of his subject.. Lucien Rees Roberts reveals a sensitivity to each subject he paints, whether it be his niece, his friends, a personage.”
Taxi, September 1987
“Rees Roberts cuts out backgrounds, foregrounds, and props and mounts them on plywood in a three-dimensional collage… He is an artist whose specialty is portraiture and his portraits are works of contemporary art themselves.”
